Crossing borders from Laos to Vietnam

We took a mini van from Luang Prabang to Dien Bien Phu (13h-220,000KIP). We were quite hesitant to have such a long journey and even looked for flight tickets from Luang Prabang to Hanoi but there were really too expensive and we thought that anyway we wanted to begin Vietnam by the north of the country (Sapa) so that would be an easier and cheaper way to go to Vietnam.

Nous avons pris un mini van depuis Luang Prabang vers Dien Bien Phu (13h-220,000KIP). Nous étions assez hésitant de faire ce long voyage vers le Vietnam mais les vols depuis Luang Prabang - Hanoi étaient assez chers et nous voulions commencer par le Nord du Vietnam (Sapa).

We begin our trip by being just the two of us for 3 hours and then locals began to join us in the small bus. That was quite a trip between the bombed road and the locals who couldn’t handle the road and were pucking every 5 minutes ; we had some fun.

Au départ, nous étions seulement deux à bord puis après 3 heures de routes, les locaux ont remplis le bus au fur et à mesure. Nous nous rappellerons les routes désastreuse ainsi que les vomissement des locaux toutes les 5 minutes... Pas top !

After 11 hours we finally got to the Dien Bien Phu border which was very empty, this border is actually in the middle of no where on the top of huge mountains. We had to get our passport stamps by the Laos customs with no fee (quite rare) and same on the Vietnamese side. From all the bad stories that we heard that was the best choice we made to cross this border to get to Vietnam and not another one.

Après 11 heures de bus nous arrivons enfin à la frontière de Dien Bien Phu se situant dans les montagnes. Coup de chance, nous avons eu à payer aucun pots de vin afin de faire tamponner nos passeports à la frontière Laotien ainsi qu’à la frontière Vietnamienne, ce qui est assez rare :) En effet, nous avons entendus beaucoup de mauvaises anecdotes concernant les passages aux frontières (Laos/Vietnam), je vous recommande donc celle de Dien Bien Phu.

We had around another extra hour or so to get to the city. The bus station is very close to a lot of guesthouses and hotels so no need to be stressed even if you arrive at night.

Nous avons ensuite roulé une heure et demi de plus afin d'arriver en ville. Si vous arrivez de nuit, ne vous inquietez pas, de nombreuses auberges de jeunesse et hôtels se trouvent aux alentours de la gare centrale.
