Mahut experience at Lao Elephant Camp

We booked a one day tour with the elephant, called « makouf » experience. For the one that do not know what this word means, it’s the word which is used in Laos for the people who « ride» elephants. Therefore this tour was supposed to help us on how to talk and drive an elephant.

L’une des attractions les plus prisées aux alentours de Luang Prabang sont les éléphants. Nous avons donc décidé de profité au maximum et avons passés une journée entière avec les éléphant : Une expérience Mahut. En d’autres terme, une journée d’initiation au dressage d’éléphant.

We began our day with a larger group with who we made an hour trip around the jungle with the elphants. After this they left and it was only 4 people left (including us) for the class. We had an hour training with a guide who taught us all the Lao words they use to speak to elephants, it is very important to know that they do not use any object that could hurt the elephants.

Nous avons commencé notre journée par une excursion d’une heure à dos d’éléphant à travers la jungle. Après cette balade la majorité des touristes nous ont quittés et sommes restés à 4 pour un cours complet sur les éléphants. Nous avons en autres appris le langage utilisé afin de diriger les éléphants. Il est important de noter que ce camp n’utilise aucun d’objets pointus, bâtons afin de diriger les éléphants (qui pourraient blesser les éléphants) à la différence de certains endroits comme la Thaïlande.

After this leasson, we went for an hour ride with the elphants ; it consisted by being on the neck alone and driving them with our voice. This was such an amazing experience as we finished the tour by giving them a lot of food (their favorite candy is the sugar can).

La leçon terminé nous sommes partis en excursion pendant une heure afin de mettre en pratique ce que nous avions appris. A la différence de notre première ballade, nous étions cette fois assis (seul) à même l’éléphant, sur leur nuque. Ce fut un merveilleux moment. Puis, nous les avons nourris de bananes et Cannes à sucre (leur préféré).

After lunch, we had the opportunity to take a bath with elephants. As the afternoon are quite hot they love and do take a bath every afternoon before going back to the jungle. Some of the elephants know how to send water on you through their trunk, as a nice wife I left my elephant to Raphael as he was faous for this. The bath was such an intimate moment with the elephant who had so much fun and shared it with us.

En fin de journée, nous avons eu l’opportunité de prendre un bain avec les éléphants ce qui fut une expérience unique. Ce moment est important pour les éléphants sachant que les journées sont très chaudes. Certains éléphants dont le mien étaient connus pour lancer de l’eau de via leurs trompes sur leur cavalier. J’ai donc préféré changer avec Raphaël d’éléphant, qui n’a pas hésité.

Nous avons passé un moment drôle et extraordinaire.

We ended the day very tired but also very happy to have been able to share this experience with these elephants. We were supposed to met again our friends Julie and Alexie who just arrived in town for dinner, but we meet this uncle and nice in the tour from Australia therefore we offered them to join us. Which end up to be one of the worst decision we made during our trip, this Australian guy got so drunk (I never seen that in my entire life) that we had to take him back to his hostel and be sure he wouldn’t either fall or try to hit on any person that looked like a girl !

Nous avons finis cette journée sur les rotules mais très heureux d’avoir pu partager ce moment exceptionnel avec les éléphants.

Le soir même nous avions prévus de revoir nos amis Julie et Alexis afin de dîner en ville ainsi qu’avec les deux Australiens avec lesquels nous avions passés la journée. La soirée ne s’est malheureusement pas déroulée comme prévu. Imaginant passer un bon moment avec nos anciens compagnons de voyage, nous avons du nous occuper d’un des deux australiens complétement bourré.

Nous devions le tenir droit toute les deux secondes afin qu’il ne tombe pas et l’empêcher de sauter sur n’importe quelle fille se trouvant sur son chemin… Marrant au début vraiment chiant à la fin.
